Treatment of Hearing Loss

EARLY DETECTION & INTERVENTION IS VITAL

Treatment of Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is a common condition that can affect anyone at any age, but it doesn’t have to limit your quality of life. There are various treatments available depending on the type and severity of hearing loss. From hearing aids and assistive listening devices to simple ear wax removal, there are many ways to manage and improve hearing. Our team is here to guide you through every step of your treatment journey, ensuring you find the right solution for your unique needs.

  • Hearing Aids

For those with mild to severe hearing loss, hearing aids are the most common treatment. These devices amplify sound, making it easier to hear conversations, music, and everyday sounds. Hearing aids come in many different styles and offer various features, such as noise reduction, Bluetooth connectivity, and rechargeable batteries. After an assessment, our Audiologist will recommend the best hearing aid option tailored to your lifestyle and hearing needs.

  • Assistive Listening Devices

For those who don’t require hearing aids, Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs) can provide support in specific situations, like watching TV, using the phone, or attending lectures. These devices can amplify specific sounds, making it easier to hear in noisy environments.

  • Cochlear Implants

For individuals with severe to profound hearing loss who do not benefit from hearing aids, cochlear implants may be an option. These surgically implanted devices bypass damaged parts of the ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve, allowing for clearer hearing. A hearing assessment is the first step to indentifying your degree of hearling loss.

  • Ear Wax (Cerumen) Removal

Sometimes, hearing loss is caused by a simple buildup of ear wax. Excess wax can block the ear canal, leading to muffled hearing, discomfort, or even infection. We offer professional ear wax removal services that use safe, gentle methods to clear the blockage. Regular ear cleaning can prevent future issues and ensure your hearing stays clear.

Why Early Detection Matters

Identifying the cause of hearing loss early is crucial for treatment and prevention of further damage. Early detection of hearing loss leads to better success with amplification, which keeps your brain busy and can help to mask tinnitus. While hearing plays a vital role in social interactions, it’s equally important to be attuned to your surroundings - such as fire alarms, doorbells, phones, and even identifying issues with appliances or vehicles. Untreated or unperceived hearing loss poses numerous risks, including cognitive decline along with social and health-related consequences.

Regular hearing assessments, proper ear care, and protection from loud noises are key to maintaining optimal hearing health. If you're experiencing hearing difficulties, don't wait -schedule a consultation with our Audiologist to get a thorough assessment and personalized treatment plan. Taking proactive steps can help you maintain better hearing for years to come.

YOUR FIRST VISIT

What to Expect

Your first step toward better hearing begins with a comprehensive hearing assessment. While appointment lengths vary depending on your specific needs, a baseline hearing assessment typically takes around 45 minutes, while comprehensive hearing evaluations take about 1.5 hours. For quicker services like ear wax removal, appointments usually last around 15 minutes. Our goal is to ensure each appointment is thorough and tailored to your hearing care needs, and that you feel informed, comfortable and confident about the next steps in your treatment journey.

When you come for your appointment, please know that some patients require more time than expected, which may cause delays. These can be hard to foresee or plan around, so we appreciate your patience if the appointment before yours is running a little behind.

Appointments include several key components such as:

  • Medical History - We’ll start by discussing your hearing health, any symptoms you’ve noticed, and your overall medical history. This helps us understand the potential causes of your hearing loss.
  • Physical Exam - Using an otoscope or video otoscopy, we’ll visually inspect your ear canal and eardrum for any blockages, wax buildup, or signs of infection.
  • Hearing Tests - You’ll undergo several types of hearing tests, including pure-tone testing, speech testing, and middle ear assessments. These tests measure how well you hear different sounds and speech at various volumes, and how your middle ear is functioning.
  • Discussion of Results - After the assessment, we’ll go over your results in detail, explaining the type and degree of hearing loss you may have. This will help us determine the best treatment options for you.
